When booking your senior session you want to make sure you have talked with your photographer about what your looking for. Do you have a vision, do you want places with flowers, more urban, city, or even more country looking, as if your not in the city? Talking with your photographer will help narrow it down for you. You want to make sure you get your free consultation with your photographer because this is where, if you want, where you can actually show your photographer some of the outfits. Talking about shoes, props, if you play sports or cheer. This way your photographer can choose a location that will fit that. If your going to college and have your gear(sweater, banner, flag, shirt) bring it with you. Your senior session is even better when you get to add that into your session.
Me, myself, I will go and look at locations after our consultation and make sure it has plenty of what I’m looking for to fit the shoot. I will literally map out the whole location and match them with your outfits.
You want to make sure your nails are fresh, say about at least two days before your session. No chips or cracks in the nails, as they stick out in your photos. Clothes should be ironed or steamed with no wrinkles. Hang them in a traveling bag so they stay ready. Make sure all your extra accessories are separated and in zip lock bags to go with your outfits. Make sure your bra is not outweighing your top,(meaning, if you are wearing a tank top that’s black or white, don’t wear an orange bra and the straps can be seen.) you have to think about all the small details, and this is why your photographer is so important to communicate with.
Let me share with you a little story of a session I had with a senior!
Remember you are your own person and you want your session to stand out. I remember I had a senior who knew exactly what she wanted. She had seen her friends senior pictures and she loved them but she wasn’t the flower girl, she wanted something that matched her own personality. She wanted bold and colors. We talked about a part of downtown with the graffiti wall and she was for it. Her mom on the other hand wasn’t really thrilled about it and didn’t want to, but she went ahead and let her make her choice. We met up and she asked witch one I thought would be great for her first outfit. It was pretty hard but she knew for a fact what she wanted for her last one.
I was very impressed with her because she was so nervous, but yet so excited and wanted to make sure she was doing everything right. (I don’t think most people understand that no matter how many times we as photographers shoot a session that we too get nervous.)She started off with a yellow dress that she even matched with some yellow heart shades and a black hat. This was such a cute look.

From there we went into her next look which was this cute polka dot red dress. I loved this young lady’s style. She was a natural in front of the camera although this was her first real professional shoot. You would of never been able to tell. That red dress definitely gave me a cute 70’s vibe with a twist of modern.

We turn to the next outfit with her leather-man jacket. Just the one location at the graffiti wall had so many options to do her session and the different locations around it.
